The findings suggest a possible benefit but the quality of evidence means the findings should be interpreted very cautiously.

Periodontitis – Global prevalence 2011-2022

This review to estimate the prevalence of periodontitis between 2011 and 2020 from epidemiological data included 55 studies. From 32 studies with confident case definition an estimate of periodontitis prevalence = 61.6% (95%CI; 55.1% to 67.9%) and a estimate of severe periodontitis = 23.6% (95%CI;17.6% to 30.1%).

This review of the prevalence of periodontal disease among pregnant women included 20 studies. The findings suggest an overal prevalence of 40% (95%CI; 15 to 100%) based on 3 studies using the same assessment criteria.

This Cochrane review update comparing full-mouth scaling/disinfection (FMS/D) to conventional quadrant scaling for periodontitis for the treatment of periodontitis included 20 RCTs. However there is still no clear evidence that FMS/D approaches provide additional clinical benefit compared to conventional treatment.

This review of the clinical efficacy of tricalcium phosphates (-containing) biomaterials in the treatment of periodontal infra-bony defects includes 16 RCTs. While the findings suggest improvements in pocket depth and clinical attachment level only 6 of the studies contributed to the meta-analyses and the number of events and studies are small so the findings should be viewed cautiously.

This review of whether amoxicillin and metronidazole used as an adjunct to full-mouth scaling and root planing improved clinical outcomes included 11 RCTs. While the findings indicate significant improvements in clinical attachment level and pocket probing depth they may not be clinically important.

Periodontitis: Locally delivered anti-microbials as an adjunct to surgical periodontal treatment

This review of the effectiveness of locally delivered adjunctive antibiotic treatment during periodontal surgery on clinical outcomes included 9 RCTs. While the findings suggested that adjunctive locally delivered antibiotics could improve some clinical sutcomes they evidence was limited and of very low certainty.
