Periodontal disease and pregnancy outcomes

Routine specialist pregnancy care involved an initial meeting to discuss quitting smoking and set a quit date, followed by 4 weekly telephone calls, and free nicotine replacement therapy for 10 weeks.

Twenty three systematic reviews were included in this overview of reviews reviews assessing the link between periodontal disease and adverse periodontal outcomes. While a majority of the available reviews suggest an association there are concerns regarding the quality of the primary studies.

Periodontitis: risk increased by poor oral hygiene

50 observational studies were included in this review of the effect of oral hygiene on periodontitis. The data suggests that poor oral hygiene increases the risk of periodontitis by around two- to five-fold compared with good OH. However the quality of the data is considered to be of low quality.

Resin-bonded fixed dental prostheses: 5 year survival and complication rates

This review of survival and complication rates of resin-bonded fixed dental prosthesis included 209 studies. The findings suggest overall survival rates of 91.3 % (95%CI; 88–93.7) . The quality of the available studies suggest that this should be interpreted cautiously.

Dentine hypersensitivity following periodontal treatment reduced by use of desensitising paste

In this small trial the use of either an 8% arginine desensitising paste or prophy paste reduced dentine hypersensitivity after scaling but the arginine base paste was significantly better than the standard prophy paste.

Severe periodontitis: affected 11% of the world population in 2010

The review represents some of the output of the 2010 Global Burden of Disease studies and finds that severe periodontitis is the 6th most prevalent disease affecting about 11% of adults worldwide.The prevalence increases gradually with age with a steep increase between the 3rd and 4th decades.
