Silver diamine fluoride: 38% more effective than 12% in arresting caries

This randomised controlled trial compared 12 and 38 % silver diamine fluoride applied annually and bi-annually to kindergarten children. . 38% applied bi-annually was most effective providing a 9% additional benefit over an annual application.

This review of silver diamine fluoride (SDF) to arrest caries included 19 studies and suggest that 38% SDF can arrest 81% ( 68-89%) of active caries. . However none of the available studies was at low risk of bias so the findings should be interpreted cautiously.

Topical fluoride for remineralising and arresting carious lesions

This review looked at topical fluoride for remineralising or arresting caries. 17 RCTs were included and overall remineralised early enamel caries using % fluoride varnish = 63.6 % (95% CI; 36.0 to 91.2 %) and 38% silver diamine fluoride had an overall proportion of arrested dentine caries = 65.9% (95% CI; 41.2 to 90.7 %).

Root caries: review suggests potential benefits from 5000ppm fluoride, chlorhexidine and silver diamine varnishes

The prevalence of root caries is expected to rise and this review looked at a range of agents for non-invasive management. While 30 studies were identified they consider a large number of agents. While the review suggested that 5000ppm fluoride dentifrice was effective the number of available trials for this and the other agent was small and of limited quality.
