Omega-3 fatty acids as an adjunct to non-surgical periodontal therapy

This review assessing the adjunctive effect of omega-3 (ω-3) fatty acids and non-surgical periodontal therapy (SRP)on probing pocket depth (PPD) and the clinical attachment level (CAL) included 10 RCTs. The findings suggest that adjunctive ω-3 fatty acids provides a 0.39 mm improvement in PPD and 0.41 mm of CAL gain.

Tooth loss during long-term periodontal maintenance

This review evaluating risk factors / predictors of tooth loss in patients with periodontitis having periodontal therapy and long-term periodontal maintenance (PM) included 33 studies only 3 of which were prospective. There findings suggest that patients having long-term PM suffer the loss of 1 tooth per patient every 10 years.

Clarithromycin as an adjunct to non-surgical periodontal treatment

This review of systemic or locally delivered clarithromycin as an adjunct to non-surgical periodontal therapy included 7 small RCTs, 4 RCTS related to systemic use and 3RCTS for local application. The findings provide moderate certainty evidence suggesting locally delivered clarithromycin significantly improves treatment outcome

Chronic periodontitis: Efficacy of adjunctive antimicrobials

Many drugs are licensed for use in Generalised Anxiety Disorder (GAD), but it is unclear what works best.

This review of the efficacy of antimicrobials adjunctive to scaling and root planing (SRP) in the treatment of chronic periodontitis. 21 RCTs were included with the findings showing that amoxicillin and metronidazole had the largest statistical benefit. Whether this benefit is a clinically important benefit is a wider question.
