New Cochrane Protocols for September 2012

There are three new Cochrane review protocols on the September  issue of the Cochrane Library.

The main aim of this review is to assess the efficacy and safety of interventions for the prevention of herpes simplex labialis in people of all ages.

Vergnes JN, Monsarrat P, Blaizot A, Nabet C, Cantagrel A, Sixou M, Furness S. Interventions for periodontal disease in people with rheumatoid arthritis. Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews 2012, Issue 9. Art. No.: CD010040. DOI: 10.1002/14651858.CD010040.

The main aim in this review is to assess the efficacy and safety of periodontal treatment in reducing rheumatoid arthritis disease activity and pain, and improving function, and reducing periodontitis in patients with both rheumatoid arthritis and periodontitis

The overall aim of this review is to assess the effectiveness of dental auxiliaries in providing care traditionally provided by dentists.

Specific objectives are to  compare the effectiveness of dental auxiliaries compared with dentists in:

  • the diagnosis of oral diseases and conditions
  • their technical competence in the delivery of some aspects of dental care;
  • oral education and other oral health promotion measures; and
  • 
delivering dental care that is acceptable to patients.

A former editor of the Evidence-Based Dentistry Journal and chief blogger for the Dental Elf website until December 2023. Derek has been involved with a wide range of evidence-based initiatives both nationally and internationally since 1994. Derek retired from the NHS in 2019 remaining as a part-time senior lecturer at Dundee Dental School until the end of 2023.
