This systematic review was first published in 2009.
The American Dental Association Center for Evidence-based Dentistry has now published a critical summary of the review.
They identified some issues with the clarity of the inclusion and exclusion criteria and the thoroughness of the search strategy, and the reporting quality. However there was consistency among the studies providing some confidence in the findings.
They found:-
“Evidence suggests that temporary anchorage devices are reliable options for orthodontic anchorage.”

The original 2009 review concluded:-
“Based on the available evidence in the literature, palatal implants and miniplates showed comparable survival rates of >or=90% over a period of at least 12 weeks, and yielded superior survival than miniscrews. Palatal implants and miniplates for temporary anchorage provide reliable absolute orthodontic anchorage.”
