This updated Cochrane review of the efficacy and safety of direct composite fillings versus amalgam fillings included 8 RCTs. Low‐certainty evidence suggests that composite resin restorations may have almost double the failure rate of amalgam restorations.
This review comparing topical natural substances with conventional antifungals in the treatment of denture stomatitis included 17 studies 14 of which were RCTs. A wider range of natural products were tested and showed similar efficacy to antifungals however, almost all the studies were at high risk of bias so the certainty of the evidence is very low.
This review evaluating the difference between fibre and metal posts for endodontically treated teeth included 10 studies 6 of which were RCTs. The findings suggest no differences in outcomes between the two main types of post assessed. However, the evidence is of low certainty.
This Cochrane review of interventions to treat carious lesions conventionally considered to require restorations in primary or permanent teeth with vital pulps included 27 RCTs. Compared with conventional treatment there were lower numbers of failures with the Hall technique and selective excavation (SE) in primary teeth and with SE and stepwise removal in permanent teeth.
This Cochrane review update of the effects of rubber dam isolation compared with other types of isolation for direct and indirect restorative treatments included 6 RCTs. The findings provide some low-certainty evidence that rubber dam may lead to fewer direct restoration failures compared with cotton roll use after six months.
This review of the prevalence of orofacial trauma in wheeled non-motor sports athletes included 5 cross-sectional studies involving 132,132 participants. Analyses showed the overall prevalence of orofacial trauma = 21.7% (95%CI; 8.7 to 34.7%) however the evidence was of very low certainty.
16 RCTs were included in this Cochrane review update of the effectiveness of techniques for alveolar ridge preservation (ARP) following dental extractions prior to implant placement. The findings suggest that ARP techniques may minimise the overall changes in residual ridge height and width six months after extraction, but the evidence is very uncertain
This review of the possible association between diabetes mellitus and dental implant complications included 10 cohort studies (8 prospective 2 retrospective). The findings suggest that patients with diabetes are more likely to have clinical complications with dental implants.
This review of whether parents’ presence in the room influences children’s behaviour, anxiety and fear during dental treatment included 16 studies. The findings suggest that parents’ presence in the operation room does not influence children’s (up to 12 years old) behaviour, anxiety and fear during dental treatment. However the included studies are all at high risk of bias so the certainty of the evidence is very low.
This review of the efficacy of denture adhesives (DAs) for complete dentures included 39 studies ( 23 RCTs and 16 CCTs). None of teh included studies were at low risk of bias with the findings suggesting that Denture adhesives can improve denture retention, bite force and masticatory performance of complete denture wearers.
