Six studies involving a total of 837 implants in 335 patients were included in this review comparing implants in augmented bone with short implants in patients with strophic jaws. The findings suggest better outcomes, fewere failed implants and complications with short implants.

The concept of the shortened dental arch was first raised as a concept 30 years ago, with the WHO endorsing a functional dentition of 20 functional teeth without resorting to a prosthesis. This large cross-sectional study from Brazil suggests that having a shortened dental arch does not have any significant impact on oral health related quality of life.

This review compared dental implant outcomes in smokers and non-smokers. 15 studies (5 prospective and 10 retrospective) were included which suggest that the odds of implant failure are higher in smokers . OR = 1.96 (95% CI; 1.68–2.30), as is the amount of marginal bone loss.

This review of root perforation repair included 17 studies that were mainly retrospective and small. The overall success rates for all materials was = 72.5% (CI; 61.9%–81.0%) with a suggestion of better rates for MTA. However, the quality of the evidence was low.

Ten studies including both in vivo and ex-vivo designs were included in this review of electronic apex locators. The authors found that precision varied with the device and type of irrigation but was not influenced by the status of the pulp tissue. However, the quality of the included studies was not high with only two being considered to be at low risk of bias.
