This review of 117 studies, which were mainly in vitro studies (93), found radiographic caries detection to be highly accurate for cavitated proximal lesions and also suitable to detect dentine caries lesions.

Caries detection: visual detection has good accuracy

occlusal caries, molar teeth

This review included 102 studies the majority (77%) being laboratory-based findings that visual inspection had good caries detection accuracy in primary and permanent teeth, with a trend for higher specificity than sensitivity.

Dental Implants placed in fresh sockets have poorer survival

shutterstock_97814552

This review included 44 studies involving a total of 1170 patients and 1974 implants finding significant better outcome in favour of the implants placed in healed ridges (99.4% implant survival) compared with post-extraction implants (95.6% implant survival).

Caries removal with a chemo mechanical system effective

shutterstock_3275732

10 studies of limited quality were included in this review and they suggest that there is no difference in complete caries removal with chemo-mechanical systems and rotary instruments. While chemo-mechanical removal was less painful, it took longer to carry out.

Lateral occlusion schemes: review suggests no difference

26 studies were included in this review of lateral occlusion schemes. The findings suggest that while there are immediate differences between the different lateral occlusion schemes, patients have the capability to successfully adapt to canine-guided or group function occlusion.

Alveolar ridge preservation: limited evidence for current techniques

shutterstock_84141019

This Cochrane review identified 8 RCTs of alveolar ridge preservation (ARP) techniques. They provide limited evidence that ARP minimises overall changes in residual ridge height and width six months after extraction.

Oral Cancer diagnosis: biopsy and histology still best method

herpetic ulcer on tongue

This Cochrane review of adjunctive diagnostic tests for oral cancer included 41 studies assessing vital staining, cytology, and light-based tests. The available studies were of poor quality detection with none of the tests being considered as a replacement for the currently used standard of a scalpel biopsy and histological assessment.

Developmental defects
of enamel and caries are they associated?

shutterstock_203756728

This review includes 7 cross-sectional studies and suggests that those with developmental enamel defects have more dental caries with a pooled odds ratio OR = 2.21 (95% CI; 1.3 – 3.54).

Dental bond strength improves with enamel etching

shutterstock_115912183

This review of 10 in-vitro studies suggests that bond strength is improved by the use of multi-mode adhesives with prior acid etching only for enamel. This improvement was not seen with mild universal adhesives in dentine.
