This Bayesian network meta-analysis only included 11 small studies of overall low quality. While the greatest reduction in PPD was seen with debridement in conjunction with antibiotics the difference are small so it is difficult to conclude that any particular non-surgical treatment for peri-implantitis performs better than debridement alone

Chronic periodontitis: review suggests that Er:YAG laser may provide short term improvement

This review compares the clinical outcomes of scaling and root planing with Er:YAG laser either as an alternative or as an adjuvant in patients with chronic periodontitis. 12 small trials were included and similar outcomes were seen with both treatments at 3 months . However hetrogeneity in teh studies and the small sample size mean that these finding should be interpreted with caution.

Endodontic microsurgery or single tooth implants after failed root canal treatment

This systematic review was looking to compare endodontic microsurgery with single implant placement. No studies directly comparing the two treatments were available. 44 studies of single implants and 6 studies of endodontic microsurgery found 2 -4 years survival rates for endodontic microsurgery were 94% and single implants 96%. The quality of the available evidence was moderate.

Intravenous midazolam sedation for dental treatment: review found no significant side effects

This review of IV midazolam for treating children and adolescents only identified 11 studies (5 RCTs, 6 non randomised). No serious adverse events were reported but there was a generalised inconsistency in side effect reporting. Consequently the call for better side effect reporting.

This review of fixed functional appliances for the treatment of class II malocclusions could only find 11 small studies with methodological problems to assess the effectiveness of this approach. Some benefit was noted but larger higher quality studies are needed.

Behçet’s disease: review found insufficient evidence to support or refute interventions for oral ulceration

This review focuses on the treatment of oral ulceration in Behçet’s disease, 15 trials examining 13 different interventions were found. There was insufficient evidence to support or refute the use of any included intervention with regard to pain, episode duration, or episode frequency associated with oral ulcers, or safety of the interventions.

Composite resin restorations: no good evidence to assess impact on dental pulp

Only 10 low quality studies were available for this review to assess if a vital pulp restored with composite resin is at greater risk of pulpal complications than one restored with other materials. Questions over the studies qualities make it difficult to draw any conclusions.

This review looked at which internal fixation method for mandibular fractures resulted in lowest complication rate. 20 studies were included and they found use of 1 miniplate is superior to using 2 ; and the transbuccally placed lateral miniplate was better than one placed on the external oblique ridge
