Bioactive glass and hydroxyapatite to occlude dentinal tubules

In her first blog for the Dental Elf Rebecca Manson takes a look at an in-vitro review of bioactive glass and hydroxyapatite for the occlusion of dentinal tubules. The findings provide some evidence that that bioactive glass/hydroxyapatite are effective in occluding dentinal tubules in an in-vitro setting. Well conducted long term clinical trials are needed to assess effectiveness in a clinical setting.

Nano-hydroxyapatite for caries prevention

This review of the efficacy of fluoride-free nano-hydroxyapatite agents (nHA) to enhance remineralisation or hamper demineralisation of enamel caries included 10 small studies. 5 studies were in-vivo and 5 in-situ but they were of short duration with 7 being at high risk of bias so provide very low certainty evidence. Additional high quality well reported studies are needed to assess nHA.

Endodontic surgery: Adjunctive regenerative techniques

This review of the influence of different regenerative techniques and materials on the outcome of endodontic surgery includes 11 RCTs. The findings suggest that regenerative approaches improve periapical lesion healing after endodontic surgery. However the studies are small and only 2 are at low risk of bias.
