This review of the effectiveness of professional mechanical/physical treatment of peri-implant mucositis included 5 RCTs. None of the included RCTs was at low risk of bias so there is little evidence to recommend one treatment of combination of treatment. Additional high quality well reported studies are needed.

Peri-implantitis – efficacy of different bone reconstructive therapies

This review of the efficacy of different bone reconstructive therapies for peri-implantitis compared to access flap surgery at 12 months or longer. included 18 studies with 12 RCTs contributing to the meta-analyses. The findings suggest that compared with access flap surgery reconstructive surgery does not offer significant improvements at 12 months but the evidence is of low certainty.

Probiotics for the management of oral halitosis

This review of the efficacy of probiotics in reducing halitosis of dental origin, when compared to a placebo intervention included 8 RCTs. Only one of the study was considered to be at low risk of bias with the authos assessing the evidence as not suggestive of a convincing benefit for the use of probiotics for treatment outcomes of halitosis.

Self-applied dentifrices for managing dentine hypersensitivity

This review and network meta-analyses of the effectiveness of self-applied dentifrices in the management of dentine hypersensitivity included 68 studies. Findings indicated that formulations including stannous, potassium +/- stannous, and arginine result in significant short ( 2-weeks) and long term inprovements. However the studies were hetrogeneous and only 4 were at low risk of bias.

Periodontitis – Global prevalence 2011-2022

This review to estimate the prevalence of periodontitis between 2011 and 2020 from epidemiological data included 55 studies. From 32 studies with confident case definition an estimate of periodontitis prevalence = 61.6% (95%CI; 55.1% to 67.9%) and a estimate of severe periodontitis = 23.6% (95%CI;17.6% to 30.1%).

Local and systemically delivered antimicrobials and surgical treatment of peri-implantitis

This review of adjunctive systemic or local antimicrobials as an adjunct to surgical treatment of peri-implantitis included 4 RCTs. The included studies only included a total of 200 pateints and were all considered to be at high risk of bias. The studies antimicrobial and treatment protocols also showed marked variation. Consequently, there is little evidence available on the effectiveness of local or systemic antimicrobials as adjuncts to surgical treatment of peri-implantitis

Chlorine dioxide mouthwash for halitosis

This review investigating the efficacy of chlorine dioxide mouthwashes in patients with halitosis included 10 RCTs. The findings suggest a potential benefit in the short-term. However the included studies are hetrogeneous and all have some concerns regarding bias so additional high quality well reported studies are needed.

Omega-3 fatty acids as an adjunct to non-surgical periodontal therapy

This review assessing the adjunctive effect of omega-3 (ω-3) fatty acids and non-surgical periodontal therapy (SRP)on probing pocket depth (PPD) and the clinical attachment level (CAL) included 10 RCTs. The findings suggest that adjunctive ω-3 fatty acids provides a 0.39 mm improvement in PPD and 0.41 mm of CAL gain.

Air polishing in supportive periodontal treatment

This review comparing of air polishing devices with conventional periodontal therapy (hand instrumentation and/or ultrasonic debridement), in patients undergoing periodontal maintenance therapy included 14 RCTs. The findings suggest that they have comparable clinical efficay although the evidence is of low certainty.

Peri-implantitis – How common is it?

This review aiming to estimate the overall prevalence of peri-implantitis included 57 studies (18 cross-sectional,18 longitudinal, 17 cohort studies, 3 RCTs and 1 case-control). Meta-analysis found an ooverall patient level prevalence of 20% (95%CI; 16.6 to 23.7%). However most of the studies used convenience samples and there was a marked heterogeneity in the diagnostic criteria used so the findings should be viewed cautiously.
