This study updates a previous meta-analysis adding 2 new studies and reassessing the findings. Overall, it suggests that the provision of periodontal treatment does not seem to prevent adverse pregnancy outcomes, although there is a suggestion of benefit in high risk populations.
Another new review of local or systemic azithromycin as an adjunct in non-surgical periodontal therapy includes 14 RCTs and demonstrates small benefits in periodontal parameters. However, the included studies are small and it is unclear if the benefits are clinically important.
This review of azithromycin as an adjunct to scaling and root planing for periodontal disease included 9 small RCTs. While some studies demonstrated some small improvements in periodontal parameters, there was no data to demonstrate superiority of azithromycin against the standard antibiotic combination of metronidazole and amoxicillin.
This review of periodontal disease and weight identified 5 cohort studies finding a positive association between weight gain and new cases of periodontitis; RR= 1.13; (95% CI; 1.06–1.20).
This review looks at the association between periodontitis and obesity. It included 13 studies (8 cohorts; 5 clinical trials) and suggests that overweight, obesity, and weight gain, may be a risk factors for developing periodontitis.
15 prospective studies were included in this review of periodontal disease (PD) & coronary disease risk. PD was associated with an increased risk of coronary disease RR=1.19; (95% CI; 1.13–1.26).
This review looked at the effectiveness of antimicrobial photodynamic therapy as an adjunctive treatment to scaling and root polishing for aggressive periodontitis. Seven small studies suggest that it may be beneficial in the short term.
Six small randomised controlled trials were found for this review assessing the use of root surface modifiers to improve the outcome of gingival recession surgery. None of the agents evaluated were seen to be of benefit.
This new systematic review from the ADA includes 72 RCTs on nonsurgical treatment approaches for chronic periodontitis. The systematic review provides the basis for a new clinical practice guideline.
This review and network meta-analysis included 11 small RCTs of limited quality, suggesting a statistically significant benefit for the use of adjunctive systemic antibiotics for the treatment of aggressive periodontitis.
